Eduard Mörike Path – the poetic hike

The famous poet and his wife Margarethe went on a summer getaway at Gasthaus Hirschen in 1857. On the occasion of his 200th birthday, the community built this diverse hiking path. The one-day hike leads through hamlets and shady forests from the town center via a high moor up to the Hochälpele, which fascinated the Mörikes with its gorgeous view. The path is signposted with commemorative plaques.

"Legend" Hike at Geißkopf

The siblings Merbot, Diedo and Ilga, who descended from the count, left their home and riches behind and dedicated themselves to the Christianization of the Bregenzerwald in the service of the Mehrerau Abbey. Ilga said goodbye to her brothers one last time on the Lorena Pass, and they wept. As soon as the tears hit the ground, a spring appeared in this very spot. Another spring appeared on the Berghalde, where Ilga had spilled water at her hermitage. These springs are places of power. The water is said to have healing powers and cure those with diseases of the eye. Those afflicted with eye diseases make pilgrimages to the springs to wet their eyes with this healing water.
From Berghof Fetz, the hike leads towards Geißkopf-Bergvorsäß-Lorena. Here, info boards tell about the legend in detail. The spring is located in the upper forest in the direction of Maien. The path was previously an old supply route from Alberschwende to Schwarzenberg. You can return to the starting point via the Unterer Geißkopf path.

Time-on-trail: ca. 2.5 hrs.
